  Then, another interesting thing happened. After being poor all his life, Chester found that being rich was not so much fun after all. So he spent the last ten years of his life giving his money away. His goal was to be poor again when he died. And he gave it away secretly. He gave money to black colleges for black students. He secretly paid the rent for poor old ladies. And he supported many world peace organizations, but he never wanted people to know who gave them the money. He always kept it a secret.
  Chester Carlson was a great man. He had a way of thinking, a way of asking questions, that was different from other people, and so he made a good scientist. He had another good quality too, that he got from being poor. He never gave up. He worked long hours at hard jobs, he educated himself, he paid for his own college, and then, when he got rich, he decided that one person being rich was not good, and so he gave away his money, all of it.
