Then, by two years later, he had made such a machine, maybe after even more fights with his wife, and he could make the first copy of a piece of paper. It was a small piece of paper, the size of a name card, and it had just two words on it, but it was the world's very first photocopy.
Amazing! He got a patent for this machine and then he tried to sell it to many companies. Amazingly, no one wanted it. They just couldn't see how useful it would be. They all said "no." But Carlson did not give up. He NEVER gave up on anything, and eventually, he found a little company, Haloid that was interested. They worked on the machine again for almost twenty more years. Then they put the first machine on the market in 1960 and they changed the company name to "Xerox."
The first Xerox machine was not a huge success at first. People didn't know how to use it. But once they figured it out, everyone wanted a photocopy machine. Chester Carlson became one of the richest men in America.
